Indeed, scientific *societies* have missed the opportunity of using *social* media to reinvent themselves, just as our scholarly communities in general seem to have buried their heads in the proverbial sand since about 1995, pretending that everything that happens around the ivory tower doesn't concern us. Now we will have to pay the price for this digital hibernation.
